if this is correct, the various city state treasuries would be just out of the picture on the left and beyond them would be the running track. We would appear to be hovering over the Palaestra, the gymnasium where the wrestlers trained. The large building in the distance on the right would be the Leonidaion, essentially the hotel for all the athletes during the Olympic Games. If so, the large temple in the centre right would be nothing other than the Temple of Zeus itself, and what looks like a market in the open are would be the site of Phidias's workshop.
Those of you familiar with the site might recognise the Phillippeion to the left (built by Philip of Macedon, or was it Alexander I can't remember, to celebrate their victory over the Greeks I believe). Oops posted too soon because there is some sort of block.Īnyway, my best guess is that this colourful picture is actually of the Altis (the sanctuary and surrounding area) at Olympia in Greece.
